How to use Articles Part 1

Most students have a hard time knowing how to use articles, especially the articles ‘a’ and ‘the.’

The first basic rule to follow is that ‘a’ is a general article, and ‘the’ is a more specific article.

When talking about something, start general and then get specific. We all know the famous sentence ‘ This is a pen.’

See we are talking about something for the first time, so we use the general article ‘a’: ‘This is a pen.’

Now let’s give some more specific information. This is a pen. The pen is black.

The first time we mention pen, we use the general article ‘a,’ and next, we use the more specific article ‘the.’

That is the basic rule for using these two articles.
