English Idiom: lower the boom
When I was 16, I got my driver’s license and bought my first car.
Like any young Canadian with a car, I sometimes drove fast and sometimes had too many friends in the car.
One Friday, I left high school at lunchtime and did not go back.
Some friends and I were driving around the city.
I did not know it then, but my father saw me, and then my mother received a call from my homeroom teacher asking where I was.
When I got home, my father lowered the boom.
He took the car keys and told me that even though it was my car, I was still his child until I became a man on my 18th birthday.
I was not able to drive until two weeks later when my father gave me back my keys.
Lowering the boom means very quickly stopping someone from doing something unacceptable.
In many cases, someone in authority lowers the boom.
