Mispronunciation can be Deadly

Mispronunciation can be Deadly

OK, well, this is only my second blog post ever in my life, so here goes. When learning pronunciation, it is essential to realize that it depends on who you talk to and where you live whether your pronunciation is ‘correct’ or not.

On the lighter side, many Americans think it is very funny when a Canadian says ‘aboot’ instead of ‘about.’  It can cause a little chuckle, and it is something to laugh about over a nice wobbly pop.

However, never and I mean never mispronounce the name of that great bald rock out in the Atlantic, my homeland Newfoundland.

I was thrilled to read an article about the perils of the mispronunciation of Newfoundland written by Tristin Hopper on page 3 in the National Post on Saturday, January 16th.

Now please don’t get scared about pronunciation. There are different pronunciations for many words throughout the various prefectures of Japan just as there are throughout the English speaking world. Just be careful!!!! HA!

New Vocabulary: wobbly: to be unsteady; wobbly pop (slang): beer or any other sparkling alcoholic beverage. ; that great bald rock out in the Atlantic: a nickname for Newfoundland used by people who love it. ; PS is the abbreviation for postscript.
