Pastime

Word of the Day: Pastime

What better day to talk about pastimes than Sunday?

This is the seventh day, the day of rest.

When I was a child, all the stores were closed on Sundays – you couldn’t even buy gasoline.

Of course, things have changed. Nothing is sacred anymore, and Sunday is pretty much like any other day.

Bars, restaurants and grocery stores are all open.

Even though that’s the case, Sunday is still a great day to discuss pastimes.

A pastime is anything you do for enjoyment, such as a hobby.

No, sleeping is not a pastime.

Although you may enjoy sleeping, it is not your hobby.

You have to sleep. It is a necessary bodily function, like using the bathroom.

You would never tell someone doing your business is your hobby, so never say sleeping is your hobby.

My pastime is walking. I love walking kilometre after kilometre at my own pace.

Walking is good for the mind and the soul.

After that, I enjoy a good read.

One of the great pleasures in life is sitting in my comfy chair, putting my feet up and reading an engaging fantasy novel before heading off to bed.

Those are and have always been my pastimes.

How about you? What are your pastimes?

From my time in Australia, I know many people like to run or swim up and down the beach.

Many have surfing as their pastime, while others prefer to sit on the beach with a good book and a tinnie (beer).

If you don’t have a pastime, I recommend you get one.

It’s great to have something you enjoy doing that is not work-related.

A pastime can be a fantastic way to release stress.
