Word of the Day: Spool
Most English learners in Japan know the words needle, thread and sewing machine, but not many know what a spool is.
A spool is a tube-shaped thing that the thread is wrapped around.
Sometimes, it is made of plastic, sometimes wood, and sometimes even cardboard.
Japanese learn to sew in school. It’s a part of their mandatory home economics courses.
Learning how to sew means learning how to use a needle, thread, and sewing machine – Japan makes some fantastic sewing machines.
There you have it.
Every person should have a needle and some spools of thread in their home to make emergency repairs to their clothing.
You never know when someone is going to have a wardrobe malfunction.
