Word of the Day: Busker
If you have travelled overseas, the chances are that you have seen a busker who is a person singing or playing music on the sidewalk, in a train station or in front of a restaurant in hopes of receiving money from passersby.
In many cities, buskers are licensed by the local city government and are only allowed to perform in some locations.
The idea is that when a performer busks (verb), they help to create an enjoyable and somewhat festive atmosphere.
It’s important to note that buskers are not beggars.
Busking is their job.
They depend on the donations to earn a living.
Yes, they are playing free of charge, hoping that the passersby enjoy their performance and make a donation to them.
If you hear a good street performer, don’t be shy about dropping some loose change into their container.
It’ll make you feel good about helping someone.
Giving them some loose change will also let them know you heard and appreciated their music.
