English Phrase: The ship of the desert

Most people are familiar with what a camel is.

You know, one hump or two?

But are you familiar with the nickname for a camel?

The nickname for the camel is the ship of the desert.

Ships are perfect for moving across vast areas of open water, and likewise, camels are perfectly adapted for moving across vast expanses of open desert.

A ship can cross an ocean because it carries enough food, water and other necessary supplies.

Similarly, a camel can survive for long periods without eating or drinking while it crosses the desert.

For these reasons, camels are sometimes called the ships of the desert.
