Word of the Day: Gavel
You’ve seen them or perhaps heard them used on TV before.
A gavel is a little wooden mallet and a symbol of authority at a meeting.
Judges, chairpersons of meetings or auctioneers use it to get attention, bring order to a meeting, or finalize a sentence or deal.
As you can see in the picture, the gavel is resting on a round coaster-like thing.
This round disk is called a sound block.
A person who has it can get attention and bring a meeting to order or finalize a sale by banging it on the sound block.
As far as I can ascertain, a sound block is used to amplify the sound and protect a desk from being damaged by being hit by a gavel.
