Lesson: AI Voices are Female. Why?

Whether you use AI assistants or not, you are aware of them. Siri, Alexa and Cortana are three of the most well-known female voices in the world. Have you ever wondered why they appear to be female? Isn’t it strange that even though men dominate the tech industry, the voices of the tech they create are female? It’s tradition to think men are better at directions and map reading than women, yet GPS voices that tell people where to go and how to get there are women. On the other hand, my AI assistant Art Lish, who reads my posts for me, is male. (Actually, since creating this lesson, I have changed the presenters to two females, Beatrix and Addison.) That was a conscious decision on my part. Why do you think I made that choice? In this lesson, we’ll discuss the significance of female voices in AI and their impact on women.

Each conversation topic is based on a theme. In order to help students acquire a basic understanding of that topic, four media articles are provided for them to read. I will never test you on the articles, but I strongly suggest you book lessons far enough in advance to give yourself enough time to properly prepare. The better prepared you are, the more benefit you will receive from our conversations.
