Lesson: Cancel Culture

Cancel Culture has become a fearful phenomenon in the English-speaking world. If you do or say something others don’t like, you may be cancelled. You’ll be harassed on social media until you close your accounts. You may lose your job and be removed from all public appearances you may have had planned. Basically, for saying something others don’t like, you are removed from the culture and society. This phenomenon also happens in Japan. Here, it’s 干される (hosareru) to be deprived of one’s role, to have one’s livelihood taken away. I’m still shocked that Kazuhiro Kiyohara has basically been removed from Japan Professional Baseball history for his drug conviction. Cancel culture is our topic for this conversation.
