Lesson: Come on Over

We all know that due to the decreasing population, this country will soon experience a severe labour shortage. The shortage has already started and is mostly affecting the service industry and blue-collar jobs. Already thousands of foreign workers are entering the country to work in aged care homes, factories and construction. Now the government is going to allow entry for up to 375,000 foreign workers beginning next year. They will be allowed to stay for up to five years and, in most cases, will not be allowed to bring their families. Is this the proper approach to finding a solution to the worker shortage? Two things we should be thinking about include the effect on Japanese culture and, of course, the impact of foreign workers being away from their families for such a long period.
