Lesson:

CRISPR

Thanks for your interest in this lesson. We are now about to step into a very complicated world. That is not to say that the world isn’t already very complicated, but we are about to add an entirely different level of complication to it. CRISPR is a technology that enables scientists to perform gene editing. Gene editing in itself is nothing new. We’ve all heard about Dolly the cloned sheep, and in South Korea, people can have their beloved pet cloned. At the end of 2018, a Chinese scientist named He Jiankui revealed that he had edited two humans’ genes to prevent them from being infected with the Aids virus. That’s your topic for our next conversation. Let’s see what we can do with it.

Each conversation topic is based on a theme. In order to help students acquire a basic understanding of that topic, four media articles are provided for them to read. I will never test you on the articles, but I strongly suggest you book lessons far enough in advance to give yourself enough time to properly prepare. The better prepared you are, the more benefit you will receive from our conversations.
