Lesson: Elderly Doing Time

As the average age of citizens living in Western societies increases, there is a reciprocal occurrence in the prison systems. The number of institutionalized elderly is approaching 33% of the prison population, placing unplanned-for demands on correctional facilities designed for much younger offenders. What happened to the idea of criminals aging out of crime? There used to be a time when the older a criminal became, the less crime they committed. Now, in Connecticut in the US, there is a system called ‘Nursing Home Parole’ where elderly prisoners are released from prisons into nursing homes. So, what should we do? Should society continue to bear the high costs of imprisoning elderly criminals? Should we release them early because they are elderly?
