Lesson: For the Money

Young Japanese are leaving Japan to seek their fortune overseas. They can sometimes double or triple their income by moving overseas. Yes, prices are much higher overseas, too, but your income gives you a sense of worth. Young university graduates today earn a salary equivalent to what I earned 30 years ago as a university student in Vancouver, Canada. Finally, after 30 years in the doldrums, the Japanese economy is beginning to see green shoots of growth and inflation. Salaries, however, are not rising. More and more Japanese women, because it’s mostly women, are moving overseas for higher wages and better working conditions. What does this mean for Japan and its greying society?
