Lesson: Grey Divorce
In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in what is commonly referred to as “grey divorce,” which is the ending of marriages among couples aged 50 and older. Several factors contribute to this rising trend. Increased life expectancy means that individuals have more years ahead of them after their children leave home, and many are reevaluating their relationships during this new stage of life. Social and cultural attitudes toward divorce have also become more accepting, reducing the stigma that once surrounded ending a long-term marriage. Additionally, women today are more financially independent than in previous generations, affording them greater autonomy to choose their marital status. Empty nest syndrome, retirement, and the desire for personal fulfillment often prompt couples to reassess their compatibility and life goals. As a result, grey divorce is reshaping family dynamics and presenting both challenges and opportunities for those experiencing later-life transitions.
