Lesson: Hostage Justice

Carlos Ghosn’s arrest towards the end of 2018 in Japan made headlines worldwide. It’s not uncommon for the rich and powerful to run into financial problems with the law. It happens all the time. However, this time, the arrest had occurred in Japan, and there was little hope for a quick release. Japan became famous for lengthy detentions of people who have been charged but not convicted of a crime. Now, Japan had the world-renowned head of an international auto conglomerate behind bars and was questioning him without a lawyer present. Ghosn was recently released with unbelievably strict restrictions, such as video monitoring of his residence. Before his release, his lawyers handed in a dossier to a United Nations human rights working group. In it, they outlined alleged abuses of Ghosn’s human rights while in detention. I am willing to bet Ghosn has experienced the ultimate culture shock that any foreigner can experience in Japan.
