Professional sports are big business around the world. Whether big business and a big game equal big profits is an even bigger question when it comes to hosting big sporting events. In North America, it doesn’t get any bigger than the Super Bowl. It’s one game, one day, with tens of thousands of fans. Of course, the Super Bowl has been stretched out to a full week of activities, but even then, there is no guarantee that the host city will make a profit or even break even. With the cost controversy surrounding the Olympics and the World Cup, it’s worth looking at the Super Bowl and the challenges hosting this event poses for the host cities.
