Lesson: Leisure Sickness

The holidays are over, a new year has started, and you’re back at work. Did you get sick during your time off? If you did, you might have experienced leisure sickness. This is when people experience physical symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, muscle aches, or cold-like symptoms right after taking a break from work or going on vacation. Instead of feeling rested, they end up feeling unwell during their time off. While leisure sickness isn’t officially recognized as a medical condition, psychologists have noticed and studied it. Some researchers think that suddenly switching from a busy, structured work routine to unplanned free time can throw off your body’s stress hormones and immune system. That’s why symptoms can show up just as you’re trying to relax. Leisure sickness shows how stress can affect your body, even when you’re supposed to be enjoying yourself.
