Lesson: Really, Rights for Robots?

Artificial intelligence (AI) will be the next big thing. Simple automation or the automation of simple processes such as welding or sending this email after you make a booking is already ubiquitous. Intelligent automation, or the creation of robots that can make decisions independently, has not been accomplished yet. The operative word here is yet. It will happen. Then what? If robots or AI can make decisions and learn autonomously, are they sentient like us? If they are, do they deserve the same rights as humans? Before you say anything, think about it for a moment. It wasn’t long ago that women were considered unintelligent enough to vote. Things changed, and rightfully so. Therefore, I ask you again if we create sentient robots or AI, should they have human rights? Perhaps this conversation will make you look at your smartphone differently.

Each conversation topic is based on a theme. In order to help students acquire a basic understanding of that topic, four media articles are provided for them to read. I will never test you on the articles, but I strongly suggest you book lessons far enough in advance to give yourself enough time to properly prepare. The better prepared you are, the more benefit you will receive from our conversations.

Below is an example article for this conversation topic.
