Lesson: Should Monopolies be Broken Up?

From the moment a company is born, it strives to become more prominent. Some companies stay small; some grow to medium size; others become large multinationals. Other companies continue to grow until they dominate the market. In our modern age, Google, Amazon and Facebook come to mind. They, however, are not the only monopolies around. Most countries have anti-monopoly laws, but when is a company so big that it should be broken into separate entities? Some would say that when a company completely dominates a market to the point where it stifles all competition, it needs to be limited by government controls. For a democracy based on capitalism to be healthy, it needs healthy market competition. Monopolies, by definition, exist in a market where there is no competition. Does this mean there is also no democracy?
