Lesson: Splinternet

The prefix inter- is used to form words meaning between or among groups of people, things, or places. Initially, that’s why the World Wide Web was called the Internet; it connected people, places and things across vast distances with no censorship in between. Almost immediately after its inception, that freedom and unhindered access to information came under threat. The danger continued to increase year by year until what we have today formed – Splinternet. Europe, The US, China, Russia, Iran, India and others are splitting off and developing their versions of what used to be called the Internet.
