Lesson: The Company Man
I am work. For much of the twentieth century, I was embodied by the moniker ‘company man’: loyal, diligent, and defined by my unwavering commitment to a single employer. I wore the same suit, caught the same train, and measured my worth in years of service and incremental promotions. I, the company man, was the backbone of organizations, a symbol of stability in an era where lifetime employment seemed possible and desirable. But the tides shifted. Globalization, technology, and corporate restructuring broke the unspoken contract. Downsizing, outsourcing, and the rise of the gig economy transformed the landscape. I can no longer expect unwavering loyalty from my employer, nor do organizations expect it in return. I am fading away, replaced by agile professionals who value skills, adaptability, and work-life balance. In today’s office, career paths are nonlinear, loyalty is fluid, and work has become a journey, not a destination. This is my story.
