Lesson: The Kids Aren’t  Alright

Recent studies have raised concerns about whether new university students have the academic skills they need, especially in reading comprehension. Those involved in higher education say that even though more students are being admitted to universities, many still struggle with the reading and comprehension required to succeed. They believe that high schools often fail to prepare students for the volume, difficulty, and critical-thinking demands of university courses. As a result, universities are seeing a widening gap between what students know and what is expected of them, affecting retention, performance, and overall outcomes. This issue has led educators, policymakers, and the public to call for changes in both high school and university education to better prepare students for university-level work.
