Lesson: Vaccine Nationalism

Human scientific capabilities are being stretched to the limit in our desperate search for a COVID-19 vaccine. They say patience is a virtue, but how long can people remain patient before they snap? Developing a safe vaccine is one challenge – distributing it to the world is quite another. Wealthy nations have already pre-purchased hundreds of millions of doses of the yet-to-be-discovered COVID-19 vaccine. Wouldn’t you do the same thing for your family if you had the money? However, these same nations are being accused of vaccine nationalism because developing countries are being shut out initially from accessing the vaccines for their citizens. Is vaccine nationalism only natural? Who should have first access to a new COVID-19 vaccine, and how should it be distributed worldwide?
