Lesson: Workaholic? Or just work long hours?

Typhoon Faxai (Number 15 by the Japanese naming system), which hit Chiba prefecture in September 2019, inspired this lesson. Perhaps we can chalk it up to cultural differences, but I find it hard to understand why so many people lined up at closed train stations to go to work. I was mesmerized by the sheer number of people in lines snaking down streets and sometimes almost as far back as the next station on the line. Today’s theme centred on the difference between workaholism vs working long hours perhaps does not explain why so many people lined up. Then again, maybe it does. I tend to think that most of those people were anxious about not showing up to work on time. Anxiety plays a large part in workaholism. I haven’t fully formed my opinions yet. I’ll leave that to our in-class discussion. Is it OK to say take it easy after giving you such a lesson topic to prepare for?

Each conversation topic is based on a theme. In order to help students acquire a basic understanding of that topic, four media articles are provided for them to read. I will never test you on the articles, but I strongly suggest you book lessons far enough in advance to give yourself enough time to properly prepare. The better prepared you are, the more benefit you will receive from our conversations.
