Lesson: Guaranteed Basic Income

As globalization spread throughout the Western economies, the income gap widened between the rich and everyone else. Countries have been desperately searching for a way to reverse this trend, and maybe now the coronavirus has shown us the way. Whether you refer to it as a guaranteed basic income (GBI) or universal basic income (UBI), countries have been considering it for years. Canada had a successful trial that ended abruptly. Finland has been the latest to conduct a live test with the idea. Most recently, two candidates for the US presidential election coming up in November wanted to implement a GBI in the United States. Even Korea is considering the idea and has a new political party dedicated to achieving one. The implementation of a GBI is an idea of how to solve poverty that won’t go away. The question is, will it solve our problems?
