Lesson: Slum Tourism

Tourism has become a significant economic driver for most of the world. There used to be a time when only locations on a pilgrimage route would reap the benefits of non-trade-related travel. Modern transportation and the rise of the middle class have made it possible for regular people to visit the Taj Mahal, The Great Wall of China or Victoria Falls in Zambia. Modern technology also makes it possible for tourists to visit the slums of Manila, the favelas of Rio de Janeiro or the shantytowns of South Africa. This is called slum tourism, and it’s very controversial because, simultaneously, it takes advantage of underprivileged people in poverty and serves to bring their plight to the world’s attention. Is slum tourism educational or just gawking?
