To break it down, 'brain' refers to intelligence and 'trust' a group, so a brain trust is a group of smart people who advise a leader.

Word of the Day: Brain trust

Brain trust sounds like a funny term, doesn’t it?

It is quite often used in professional situations.

If we break it down, ‘brain’ refers to intelligent people and ‘trust’ represents a group.

Hence a brain trust is a group of intelligent people whose job it is to advise a politician or a company leader.

I guess they are supposed to be talented or at least knowledgeable in their area of specialization.

Sometimes, I wish I had a brain trust to advise me on what to do.

I tell you, if I did have one, I would use their advice to make a little money, then take time off to hang around a beach for a few months.

Then things really would be looking up!
